San Luis officials propose expanding commercial border crossing

Officials in San Luis, Arizona, are considering a long-term plan to transform the current commercial border crossing into a facility that also accommodates pedestrians and private vehicles. This proposal aims to address population growth and increasing border movement in the Yuma and San Luis regions by expanding port capacity to meet potential demand between Mexico and the United States.

Javier Vargas, Vice Mayor of San Luis and board member of the Yuma Port Authority, stated that the transition would be gradual. The plan involves monitoring the performance of the new commercial port and assessing user wait times over the next three to five years. Potential modifications include the addition of lanes for the SENTRI program, though final decisions depend on agreements with federal authorities.

The initiative is linked to the Greater Yuma Port Corridor, a regional strategy designed to improve connections between the commercial port, Somerton, and Yuma. Arizona state officials and the Yuma Port Authority are utilizing resources for environmental and feasibility studies to present the project to the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA).
