San Luis Potosí approves renal transplant reforms for pediatric patients

The Congress of the State of San Luis Potosí has approved reforms to the Donation and Transplant Law to improve renal transplant mechanisms, with a specific priority on pediatric patients.

Proposed by Deputy Frinné Azuara Yarzábal following a request from the State Transplant Center (CETRA), the reform aims to address the life-threatening risks faced by minors on waiting lists. Key measures include the creation of a specific chapter on pediatric transplantation and the establishment of a mandatory priority for children, requiring medical units to guarantee evaluation, compatibility studies, and treatment within a maximum of eight months.

Additional provisions include the modernization of the State Registry of Donors and Recipients through a digital, interoperable system, mandatory semiannual training for hospital coordinators, and the implementation of permanent public awareness campaigns. The reform also seeks to integrate donation education into basic and upper secondary school curricula.
