San Luis Potosí Congress seeks to update State Mezcal Law

The Economic and Social Development Commission of the San Luis Potosí State Congress has approved a draft reform to the State Mezcal Law. The initiative aims to harmonize local legislation with current federal regulations.

The reform includes updating the legal definition of mezcal to reflect modern production characteristics and updating references to the Official Mexican Standard (Norma Oficial Mexicana) that governs production, packaging, and distribution. This update is necessary as the standards in place when the original state law was enacted in 2018 have since been replaced.

Legislators noted that mezcal production has seen significant growth, with national production increasing 2.6 times over the last six years. In San Luis Potosí, growth has been particularly notable in the Central and Altiplano regions, including municipalities such as Charcas, Mexquitic de Carmona, Ahualulco, and Moctezuma.
