San Luis Potosí deputy proposes prison for digital animal cruelty incitement

In San Luis Potosí, Deputy Brisseire Sánchez López has proposed a reform to the state Penal Code to criminalize the incitement of animal cruelty via digital and physical means. The initiative targets individuals who intentionally promote, organize, or disseminate material that glorifies or encourages animal abuse on social media to gain recognition or economic benefit.

Under the proposal, offenders could face between five and twelve months of imprisonment, fines ranging from 30 to 130 UMAs, and potential disqualification from animal care professions for up to one year. The legislator emphasized that the reform aims to address new forms of violence in digital environments while respecting freedom of expression by only penalizing intentional acts with the capacity to provoke actual crimes.
