San Luis Potosí Congress reduces electoral precampaign duration to 20 days

The Congress of San Luis Potosí has approved a reform to the State Electoral Law that reduces the duration of precampaigns for the governorship, local deputies, and municipal governments to 20 days. The measure passed with 13 votes in favor and 10 against.

Critics, including members of the Morena party and San Luis Potosí Mayor Enrique Galindo Ceballos, have expressed concern over the decision. Galindo described the move as “another scratch against democracy,” arguing that shorter periods may disadvantage candidates who require more time to introduce themselves to the electorate. Morena legislators also questioned the lack of a technical opinion from the State Electoral and Citizen Participation Council (CEEPAC) and the speed of the legislative process.

Additionally, the Congress approved a constitutional reform regarding the eligibility requirements for the State Attorney General (FGE). The new rules eliminate the requirement of being a native of San Luis Potosí and reduce the minimum residency requirement from five years to two.
