San Luis Potosí Legislature Proposes ATV Restrictions to Protect Natural Areas

State Deputy Gabriela Guadalupe Martínez Vázquez introduced a reform to the San Luis Potosí Environmental Law that would regulate the use of all‑terrain vehicles, including quad‑bikes and recreational ATVs, within the state’s protected natural zones. The proposal seeks to curb damage to vegetation, soils, water bodies and wildlife while preserving the region’s adventure‑tourism sector.

Key measures include banning unrestricted vehicle access in protected areas, creating a registry for service providers, defining approved routes, requiring mandatory training for operators, and granting municipalities stronger inspection and sanctioning powers. Martínez Vázquez cited the constitutional right to a healthy environment and Supreme Court rulings that support preventive actions to safeguard high‑value ecosystems.
