San Luis Potosí prisons face challenges caring for elderly inmates

The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) has issued an alert regarding the aging population within the prison system of San Luis Potosí. According to a 2023 national diagnosis, three state correctional centers—La Pila, Rioverde, and Tamazunchale—showed deficiencies in providing adequate care for elderly inmates.

Of the 2,637 people incarcerated in the state's five prisons at the time of the report, 99 were elderly. The CNDH identified several critical issues, including overcrowding, insufficient services, and a lack of personnel trained in gerontology. The report also noted that prison architecture lacks necessary physical adaptations, such as ramps, and that elderly inmates are often assigned high bunks or cells in difficult-to-access areas, increasing their vulnerability.
