San Luis Potosí ramps up fire response and vegetation science programs

State civil protection chief Nadia Ochoa Limón reported that, in 2026, San Luis Potosí has responded to 87 forest fires, burning more than 23,550 hectares across its 59 municipalities. The response relies on continuous monitoring, rapid‑deployment brigades and coordination with municipal authorities, emergency services and local communities to safeguard residents and ecosystems.

In parallel, the state’s Secretariat of Ecology and Environmental Management (Segam) convened a scientific panel titled “The vegetation of San Luis Potosí: Diagnosis and perspectives.” Researchers and officials, including experts from the University of San Luis Potosí and the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas, presented data on the state’s 61,138 km² area, which ranks as the fifth‑most biodiverse in Mexico. The panel aimed to develop science‑based proposals for the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of forests, jungles and shrublands, aligning with Governor Ricardo Gallardo’s broader environmental agenda.

Both initiatives underscore the administration’s strategy to combine immediate fire‑fighting measures with long‑term ecological research to address climate‑related challenges and preserve natural heritage.
