San Luis Potosí schools suspend classes as World Cup 2026 inauguration sparks nationwide celebrations

The state education authority in San Luis Potosí announced that all schools will be closed on Thursday, 11 June 2026, so students and about 40 000 teachers can watch the FIFA World Cup 2026 opening ceremony and the first match. More than 540 000 pupils across the four regions of the state will miss class, joining other Mexican jurisdictions such as Mexico City, Jalisco and the State of Mexico that also adjusted schedules for the event.

In the city of Monclova, Coahuila, the World Cup fever was visible on the streets as children arrived at school wearing the green Mexican national jersey. Restaurants, cafés and workplaces set up large screens, and employees displayed the national colors, turning the inauguration into a community celebration far beyond the host venues. The enthusiasm reflects Mexico’s historic role as a three‑time World Cup host.
