San Luis Potosí uses facial recognition to detain 40 criminal targets

Authorities in San Luis Potosí have utilized facial recognition technology to identify and detain approximately 40 individuals, including criminal targets and persons with outstanding arrest warrants. Jesús Juárez Hernández, head of the State Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), reported that the technology has been particularly effective during the Feria Nacional Potosina (Fenapo).

Governor José Ricardo Gallardo Cardona stated that those arrested face charges including homicide, rape, and various drug-related offenses. The facial recognition system is being integrated into several security installations, such as the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) and the State Civil Guard (GCE). Officials noted that these specialized cameras provide significantly higher image clarity than standard street cameras, facilitating more accurate identification.

In addition to facial recognition, security forces are utilizing robotic equipment equipped with cameras to inspect vehicles and support field personnel. The identification process relies on a database containing information on individuals with legal issues both within San Luis Potosí and across the country.
