San Luis province advances $1 million forest fire prevention plan with FAO support
The provincial government of San Luis presented the final draft of its Forest Fire Prevention Plan in Luján, bringing together officials from seven municipalities, technical teams from INTA, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the National University of the Comechingones (UNLC). The plan, backed by a $1 million investment from the Green Climate Fund, aims to protect the western corridor of the Central Sierras, a key area for native forest conservation and water supply.
The initiative, now 80 % complete, was highlighted by Minister Federico Trombotto, who said: “Con estas actividades fomentamos el trabajo conjunto entre instituciones, municipios y comunidades, porque la prevención de incendios no es solo una tarea técnica, es también una oportunidad para generar empleo, fortalecer capacidades y construir un territorio más seguro y sostenible.” FAO praised the process as “the result of a participatory effort that gathered territorial actors to build a strategy adapted to local challenges and protect a key zone for native forest conservation.” Implementation is scheduled to begin in early 2027.
The plan includes a risk map, education and awareness measures, sustainable forest management, strengthened territorial governance and improvements to strategic infrastructure, positioning San Luis as a national reference for building resilience against forest fires.
