San Marco in Lamis resident appeals to save historic chapel

A 16-year-old resident, Michele Pio De Bergolis, has issued an open letter to the Mayor and administration of San Marco in Lamis to prevent the abandonment of the historic San Michele Arcangelo chapel, locally known as ‘Sammichelicchie’.

The chapel, located along the ancient ‘Strettelicchia’ path near the Convento di San Matteo, holds significant historical and devotional value for the community. It houses a wooden statue of Archangel Michael created by artist Tommaso Martino.

De Bergolis noted that the site was previously maintained by his family, but following the passing of his grandfather, the area has fallen into disrepair. He reported issues including overgrown vegetation blocking access, animal carcasses, and abandoned waste. The youth is calling for urgent institutional intervention to clean the site and restore the area.
