San Marcos de Colón faces critical water shortage and crop failure

San Marcos de Colón, located in the Choluteca department of Honduras, is facing a severe water crisis due to a prolonged drought. Mayor Douglas Ordóñez has warned that current water reserves may only last for a maximum of 15 days as rivers and lagoons continue to deplete.

The drought has caused significant agricultural damage, with corn and bean crops reported as 100% lost. The coffee sector also faces potential harvest reductions, while the livestock industry is struggling due to dried-up lagoons and the loss of grazing pastures.

Mayor Ordóñez has called on the government and the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) to expedite the delivery of promised incentives for livestock producers. Additionally, the mayor expressed concern regarding food aid, noting that only 1,450 rations have been received to support more than 7,000 families in the municipality.
