San Marcos River faces environmental decay in Puerto Plata

The San Marcos River in Puerto Plata is facing severe environmental degradation and a significant reduction in water flow, according to local residents and environmental advocates. The river, which originates in the mountains of Gallo and flows past Isabel de Torres before reaching the Atlantic Ocean, has seen its water levels drop so drastically that some sections can now be crossed on foot without getting wet.

Community members and experts identify several causes for this decline, including the removal of riparian vegetation, the large-scale extraction of sand, stones, and construction materials, and the dumping of untreated wastewater and solid waste. The loss of depth has particularly affected traditional recreational areas like the ‘poza del Anón,’ which was once a popular spot for local families.

Environmental manager Carlos Trinidad has called for government intervention, suggesting a model similar to the actions taken at Arroyo Gurabo in Santiago. Additionally, Juan Antonio Martínez, representing local neighborhood associations, emphasized the urgent need for an action plan to halt pollution and recover the affected areas to ensure the river's preservation.
