San Marino birth rates decline by 19.5% in first half of 2026

San Marino has experienced a significant decline in birth rates during the first half of 2026. According to the latest bulletin from the National Statistical Office, only 66 births were recorded between January and June, representing a 19.5% decrease compared to the 82 births recorded during the same period in 2025.

This downturn follows a period of growth in 2025, when births rose to 165 from 144 in 2024. The demographic situation is further impacted by a negative natural balance; with 149 deaths recorded in the first six months, the gap between births and deaths reached -83, compared to -60 in the previous year.

Despite the falling birth rate, the total resident population grew to 34,167 by June 30, an increase of 29 people compared to the previous year. This growth is attributed to migratory movement, with 199 new residents arriving and 121 leaving the country during the first half of the year.
