San Marino: Committee collects signatures for seven referendum proposals

The committee ‘I CapiFamiglia’, in collaboration with Pro San Marino and the Socialist Party, has launched a signature collection drive for seven referendum proposals in San Marino. During a recent event in Domagnano, organizers reported collecting approximately 120 signatures in under two hours, doubling their initial target.

The proposals cover a wide range of political, economic, and social issues, including:

• International agreements and treaties: Requiring mandatory confirmatory referendums for those affecting national sovereignty. • Electoral reform: Reducing the signature threshold for referendums from 3% to 1.5% and abolishing the 5% electoral threshold for seat distribution in the Grand and General Council. • Monetary policy: Ensuring freedom of choice between cash and digital payment methods, and separating Central Bank roles from mandates in the Grand and General Council. • Respect for votes: Protecting referendum decisions from being bypassed or modified without new consultations.

The committee has also noted that the European Court of Human Rights is reviewing an appeal filed following the previous rejection of a referendum question by the Collegio Garante. While opposition party Domani Motus Liberi has already filed its own proposal regarding the Association Agreement with the EU, ‘I CapiFamiglia’ expressed concerns regarding a lack of citizen involvement in national decision-making.
