San Marino confirms annual mammography screening continues

Health authorities in San Marino have clarified that annual mammography screening will continue, following a period of controversy regarding potential changes to the frequency of the service.

The debate arose after the Executive Committee of the Istituto per la Sicurezza Sociale (ISS) initially proposed moving to a biennial screening schedule, citing concerns over radiation exposure and thyroid cancer risks. This proposal led to accusations from political groups, such as Repubblica Futura, suggesting the change was motivated by budget cuts and performance bonuses for management.

In response, ISS Medical Director Alessandro Bertolini stated that there are no planned cuts to screening. Instead, the institution has launched a five-year observational scientific study involving senological diagnostics and tumor registries to evaluate the current model.

Despite the official clarification, community groups like Comunità e Territorio San Marino have expressed concern over the confusion caused by the conflicting statements. They report that the uncertainty has caused significant anxiety and a loss of trust among patients, particularly those currently undergoing oncological treatment.
