San Marino debates strategic waste-to-energy plant proposal
San Marino is considering the construction of a waste-to-energy plant designed to process 250,000 tons of waste annually. Proponents suggest the facility could serve as a regional hub, reducing dependence on foreign landfills and generating significant revenue for the state over the next three decades by treating interregional waste flows from Italy.
However, the proposal faces opposition from local groups, such as the Gualdicciolo Citizens Group for the Defense of Health and the Environment. Opponents raise concerns regarding the environmental and landscape impact on the small territory, increased heavy vehicle traffic, and potential pollution of soil, air, and water. They also question the transparency of the process and the potential for private companies to manage the infrastructure under state ownership.
