San Marino faces rising unemployment and demographic decline

San Marino is facing significant structural challenges regarding its labor market and demographic stability. Recent statistical data reveals an increase in unemployment, with the number of individuals immediately available for work rising to a rate of 2.68%, up from 2.25% the previous year. The Unione Sammarinese Lavoratori (USL) noted that this trend affects highly educated individuals, with approximately 28.6% of job seekers holding university degrees.

Simultaneously, the country is experiencing a deepening demographic crisis. In the first half of 2026, San Marino recorded only 66 births against 149 deaths, resulting in a natural balance of -83. This decline in births, coupled with an aging population—where the average age has risen from 42.90 in 2016 to 46.42 in 2025—highlights a long-term structural imbalance. The CDLS has called for the urgent approval of new family support legislation to address these trends.
