San Marino introduces parental allowance for sick children

San Marino has introduced the Parental Economic Allowance (IEG) under the new Family Law (No. 141/2026). This benefit allows one parent at a time to take leave from work to care for a child under the age of 14 who is hospitalized or has a certified illness lasting more than two days.

The allowance applies to both employees and self-employed workers who are compliant with social security contributions. The compensation rates are structured as follows: 86% of remuneration from the 1st to the 14th day, 100% from the 15th to the 180th day, and 86% from the 181st to the 365th day. For self-employed workers, the support can be recognized from the first day of absence.

For residents of San Marino, the process is managed through the ISS pediatrician via the AREAS IT system. The parent must declare that the other parent is not simultaneously claiming the same benefit. While certificates are automatically acquired by the ISS, employees must notify their employers promptly and provide a copy of the certification, except for those in the Expanded Public Sector, whose documentation is handled through internal administrative channels.
