San Marino ISS launches health initiatives for early cancer and Alzheimer's diagnosis

The San Marino Social Security Institute (ISS) is launching several health initiatives focused on early diagnosis and prevention. As part of the European ‘Make Sense Campaign 2026’, the ISS will host two days of free ENT (Otorhinolaryngology) screenings on September 23 and 24 at the State Hospital. These screenings are primarily aimed at patients aged 40 to 65, though others with persistent symptoms in the mouth, throat, nose, ears, or neck may also attend. The campaign emphasizes the ‘one symptom for three weeks’ rule to encourage medical consultation.

In conjunction with Alzheimer's awareness efforts, the ISS is highlighting the importance of early diagnosis for neurocognitive disorders. San Marino currently reports 627 patients with neurocognitive impairments, with a significant portion maintaining relative autonomy. Health officials, including ISS Director General Claudio Vagnini, emphasized the need for timely specialist evaluation and integrated support for both patients and caregivers to manage the progression of dementia effectively.
