San Marino: RETE challenges costs and safety of new railway project

The political group RETE has submitted an official interrogation to the San Marino Congress of State regarding the newly inaugurated 140-meter 'Trenino Bianco Azzurro' railway project. The inquiry follows government statements by Secretaries of State Ciacci and Pedini Amati, who described an extension of the line to Borgo Maggiore as 'indispensable.'

RETE has raised several concerns regarding the project's operational and financial impact. Reported issues include a reduction in bus parking spaces from 14 to 7, incorrect road gradients causing buses to scrape the ground, and safety risks where double-decker buses may strike train cables, potentially causing sparks or requiring the train power to be disconnected.

The interrogation seeks clarification on the total cost of the initial 140 meters, projected maintenance and management expenses, and the expected economic return. Additionally, RETE questioned the necessity of the project given other stalled public works, such as an oncology department construction site and lack of air conditioning in summer centers.
