San Marino State Hospital introduces vNOTES gynecological surgery

The Obstetrics and Gynecology Unit of the Istituto per la Sicurezza Sociale at the San Marino State Hospital has implemented the vNOTES (vaginal Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery) technique. This minimally invasive approach allows surgeons to access the abdominal cavity through the vaginal route, combining vaginal access with laparoscopic endoscopic instrumentation.

By avoiding external abdominal incisions, the method aims to reduce post-operative pain, shorten hospital stays, and eliminate external scarring. The technique is applicable to various gynecological procedures for selected patients, including hysterectomies and surgeries involving the ovaries and fallopian tubes, particularly for benign pathologies.

Dr. Antonino Lo Re, Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Unit, noted that the hospital has already successfully performed the first two interventions, with patients being discharged within 24 hours. He highlighted that this method is still relatively uncommon in the surrounding regions, including Emilia-Romagna, positioning San Marino as a specialized center for this advanced surgical option.
