San Marino teachers approve reform to overhaul recruitment

San Marino has approved a major reform to its teacher recruitment model following a referendum in which 65% of participating educators voted in favor of a new agreement between the government and trade unions. The reform aims to address structural precariousness in the education sector by replacing the traditional public competition system with periodic, programmed hiring based on actual school needs and teaching rankings.

The new model includes a restructured probationary period and updated evaluation criteria designed to value the educational function. It also provides enhanced protections and rights for all staff, including those dedicated to support and inclusion. To address economic concerns, the agreement includes recognitions such as seniority increments for precarious workers.

With the referendum results, trade unions have been mandated to finalize the agreement and begin negotiations on further organizational aspects, including teacher transfers and personnel evaluations.
