San Martino Hospital in Genoa faces homicide investigation after patient dies during lung biopsy
A 60‑year‑old woman from Genoa died on 22 July after a severe internal hemorrhage during a routine lung‑biopsy performed at the San Martino Hospital’s day‑hospital unit. The Prosecutor’s Office opened a manslaughter‑by‑negligence investigation, naming the department chief and a resident doctor as suspects. Prosecutor Valentina Grosso ordered an autopsy, which will be carried out by forensic pathologist Yao Chen of the University of Pavia to determine the exact cause of the bleeding and assess procedural correctness. The two doctors are being assisted by lawyer Antonio Rubino, with forensic consultant Francesco Ventura appointed, while the victim’s family is represented by another attorney.
