San Martín approves ban on plastic bags and Styrofoam

The San Martín City Council has unanimously approved an ordinance to prohibit the use of common plastic bags, plastic straws, and expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam) containers in various businesses and supermarkets.

Introduced by Councilor Romina Bordallo, the measure aims to reduce non-degradable waste. The regulation includes exceptions for cases where such materials are strictly necessary for preserving food or medicine, or when no biodegradable alternative exists.

Businesses have a 45-day grace period from the date of promulgation to comply. The municipality will also launch awareness campaigns to assist the transition.
