San Mateo County jury awards $33M in fatal Redwood City street racing crash

A San Mateo County jury has awarded $33 million in a wrongful death lawsuit stemming from a 2022 street racing collision in Redwood City. The crash, which occurred on November 4, 2022, killed Gregory Ammen, 44, and Grace Spiridon, 42, leaving their twin daughters, who were seven at the time, without parents.

The jury found Cesar Morales, who was 17 at the time of the incident, liable for the damages. Evidence presented during the trial indicated Morales was driving up to 110 mph while racing another vehicle when he struck the family's car. The jury also found Morales' parents, Arnold Morales and Susana Salto Alvarez, negligent for failing to prevent their son's conduct.

The other driver involved in the race, Kyle Harrison, had previously pleaded no contest to vehicular manslaughter and felony street racing. Harrison was sentenced to eight years in prison but died in custody in March 2025 due to an accidental overdose. Morales had previously been sentenced to 90 days of electronic home monitoring and probation following juvenile court proceedings.
