San Mateo County leaders warn of $226 million funding shortfall
San Mateo County leaders and representatives from 20 local cities are demanding a permanent fix to a state funding mechanism for Vehicle Licensing Fee (VLF) revenues. The county faces a projected shortfall of $226 million due to an outdated formula that fails to replace local revenue lost after California voters reduced the VLF tax in 2004.
Officials warn that without a resolution, nearly 1,000 employees could be laid off in the next fiscal year. Potential impacts include increased response times for police and fire departments, slower infrastructure repairs, and reduced public services. Redwood City Mayor Elmer Martínez Saballos noted that 40 frontline positions, including firefighters, police officers, and librarians, could be eliminated.
San Mateo is one of three California counties—alongside Mono and Alpine—affected by this shortfall. The county has previously taken legal action against the state, seeking nearly $38 million owed for the fiscal year ending in 2024.
