San Mateo County voters to decide on independent redistricting commission
In the upcoming November 3 election, San Mateo County voters will consider Measure U, a ballot measure that would establish an independent redistricting commission. If passed, this body would be responsible for drawing the boundaries for the county’s five supervisorial districts, removing that authority from the Board of Supervisors.
Currently, the Board of Supervisors holds final authority over district lines. While an advisory commission of residents provided recommendations during the 2021 redistricting process, the board ultimately chose to adopt a different map with minimal changes. Supporters of Measure U, including District 1 Supervisor Jackie Speier, District 4 Supervisor Lisa Gauthier, and leaders from the League of Women Voters, argue that the current system allows for potential conflicts of interest, as supervisors can influence the populations they represent.
Proponents suggest that transferring redistricting power to an independent body would eliminate these self-interest concerns and ensure more equitable representation.
