San Miguel de Aralar effigy makes historic visit to San Sebastián
The effigy of San Miguel de Aralar made a historic visit to San Sebastián on October 10, 2026, marking the first time the image has visited the province of Gipuzkoa since at least the 16th century. The event was organized jointly by the Diocese of San Sebastián and the Sanctuary of Aralar.
Hundreds of faithful followers from both Gipuzkoa and Navarra gathered in Bilbao Square to receive the procession. The religious figure, known as the ‘walking archangel,’ was carried through the streets to the Cathedral of the Buen Pastor. The ceremony included participation from various clergy members, including the rector of Mont Saint Michel from France, and was accompanied by traditional music from a group of txistularis.
The visit highlights the historical and cultural ties between the territories of Navarra and Gipuzkoa, linked by the Aralar mountain range. The relic consists of a wooden carving housed within a gilded silver reliquary.
