San Miguel de Tucumán named Argentina's symbolic capital by law

The Argentine Chamber of Deputies has passed a law designating San Miguel de Tucumán as the symbolic capital of the Republic of Argentina every July 9. This legislation ensures that the central official ceremonies commemorating Independence Day will be held permanently in the city where independence was declared in 1816.

Sponsored by Senators Beatriz Ávila and Sandra Mendoza, the bill received 67 affirmative votes. The law provides legal stability to the tradition of holding national celebrations in Tucumán, moving the practice from a discretionary executive decree to a permanent legal requirement. This change prevents the location of the ceremonies from depending on the decisions of successive administrations.

The initiative highlights the historical importance of the northern region, referencing milestones such as the Battle of Tucumán in 1812 led by Manuel Belgrano. Proponents stated the law serves as a historical vindication for the people of Tucumán and recognizes the province's central role in the nation's formation.
