San Miguel Xoxtla residents block water well drilling

Residents of San Miguel Xoxtla, Puebla, mobilized on Wednesday to halt the drilling of a deep water well at Pavigi Park. Protesters expressed concerns that the extraction would exacerbate local water shortages to supply the state capital.

The demonstration led to confrontations between citizens and state security forces. Reports indicate that over 500 riot police were deployed to protect the drilling machinery, resulting in physical clashes involving shields and batons. Despite the police presence and aerial surveillance, residents managed to reach the excavation site and used debris, stones, and earth to obstruct the machinery.

Local inhabitants claim that existing wells in the municipality have failed to provide sufficient water and have accused the local government of permitting works without proper authorization. The project, initiated by the Municipal Water Services Operator (SOAPAP), has faced ongoing community resistance since 2025.
