San Miguelito authorities evaluate extension of security curfew

Authorities in the San Miguelito district of Panama are evaluating whether to extend a recent curfew implemented to bolster public security. Mayor Irma Hernández announced that a meeting with the National Police and other security agencies is scheduled for Tuesday to review the results of the 15-day mobility restriction applied across four corregimientos.

During the enforcement period, more than 400 additional security personnel were deployed to the district. While the mayor noted that the first week of the curfew saw no homicides, subsequent violent incidents have prompted a need for further analysis. The decision regarding future measures will depend on a formal report from the police regarding the impact of the restrictions.

In addition to mobility controls, the municipal administration is pursuing complementary safety measures, including the recovery of public spaces, improved street lighting, and youth-oriented prevention programs. The mayor emphasized that while the curfew serves as a palliative measure, long-term security requires coordinated action between the municipality, the Ministry of Security, and the judicial system.
