Claudia Sheinbaum deems INE 2027 election budget excessive
Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, criticised the Instituto Nacional Electoral’s (INE) proposed budget for the 2027 federal elections, calling it “exaggerated.” The INE’s draft calls for 36.119 billion pesos, roughly 15 billion pesos more than the cost of the 2024 election, which Sheinbaum said should be the reference point, adjusted only for inflation. She argued that the 2027 contests – renewal of the 500 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and 17 state governorships – will be similar in scope to 2024, which also required printing ballots for the presidency, Senate and Chamber. The president urged INE councilors to cut the request. INE defended the increase, citing a larger electoral roll (rising from about 98 million to over 102 million voters), a rise in polling stations from 170,181 to 176,741, inflation and other operational factors. The budget is broken down into a base allocation of 14.036 billion pesos, 17.395 billion for institutional projects and a 4.687 billion precautionary fund for possible popular consultations or revocation processes. The proposal remains subject to review by the INE’s executive board and later approval by the Chamber of Deputies.
