San Pablo Coapan prepares for cempasúchil flower harvest
The community of San Pablo Coapan, located in the municipality of Naolinco de Victoria, Veracruz, is preparing for the harvest of cempasúchil (marigold) flowers for the Day of the Dead festivities. Producers expect to harvest approximately 50,000 rolls of flowers across 25 hectares of land.
Local producers, including Saúl Llera, Lizeth Barradas, and Demetrio Martínez, emphasize the importance of preserving native criollo seeds over external varieties. This year, the harvest faced challenges from drought and pests, including crickets, rabbits, and the 'gallina ciega' pest. Despite these difficulties and a reported lack of federal or state support, the community anticipates welcoming around 5,000 national and international visitors.
In addition to the floral displays, the region offers traditional gastronomy such as pan de muerto baked in wood-fired ovens, tamales, and atoles. The local economy benefits significantly from this season, generating over 1,800 direct and 1,300 indirect jobs.
