Residents of San Pablo Huitzo, Oaxaca, have occupied the Capufe toll booth on the Oaxaca-Cuacnopalan highway for three consecutive days. The protesters are demanding urgent solutions to water contamination affecting local streams and wells.
Community leaders allege that a 22-year-old wastewater treatment plant is malfunctioning and discharging sewage into the Cañada Corazón stream. This contamination has reportedly affected the water supply for approximately 1,800 people in the region, with local analyses detecting high levels of fecal coliforms. Residents also cited poor sanitation at the toll plaza and accumulated trash along the highway as additional environmental and health concerns.
As a form of pressure, protesters are allowing vehicles to pass through the toll booth without payment, though they have not blocked traffic entirely. The Oaxaca State Congress has called on Capufe to conduct an independent technical investigation and implement sanitation measures.
