Salazar found guilty of murdering L.A. County Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer

A jury has found Kevin Eduardo Cataneo Salazar, 32, guilty of the first-degree murder of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer. The shooting occurred on September 16, 2023, in Palmdale, where Clinkunbroomer was ambushed while sitting in a marked patrol car at a traffic signal.

Jurors determined that Salazar deliberately lay in wait and committed the premeditated murder of a peace officer, using a .22-caliber revolver during the attack. The verdict follows a trial where Salazar entered a dual plea of not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity.

The legal proceedings will now move to a sanity phase, where the jury will determine if Salazar was legally sane at the time of the offense. This determination will dictate whether he is sentenced to state prison or committed to a state hospital. District Attorney Nathan Hochman described the verdict as an important step toward justice for the deputy's family and community.
