Mexico regional tensions rise over land rights and environmental protection
Various social and political tensions are emerging across different regions of Mexico. In Oaxaca, the Defensoría de los Derechos Humanos del Pueblo de Oaxaca issued an early warning due to a land dispute in La Playita, San Pedro Amuzgos, involving reports of threats, intimidation, and gunfire following efforts to recover territory.
In other parts of Oaxaca, residents of Ayotla in Ixtapaluca have denounced local authorities for allegedly allowing deforestation and urban expansion into protected natural areas. Meanwhile, the community of San Pedro Huamelula has approved communal statutes to defend their territory against infrastructure projects like the Salina Cruz–Zihuatanejo highway expansion.
In Puebla and Tlaxcala, residents protested at Palacio Nacional against the installation of circular economy development poles (Podecibi), citing environmental concerns and government intimidation. Additionally, the Oaxaca State Prosecutor's Office is working to modernize justice through national coordination and the integration of artificial intelligence in criminal investigations.
