San Pedro Cholula commemorates 507 years since the 1519 massacre

San Pedro Cholula municipal president Tonantzin Fernández led civic and pre-Hispanic ceremonies to commemorate the 507th anniversary of the Cholula Massacre. The events honored those killed in October 1519 during the Spanish conquest led by Hernán Cortés.

During the civic ceremony, Fernández requested a minute of silence for those who died defending their culture and opposed violent cultural imposition. She emphasized the importance of remembering history to avoid repeating past mistakes. The subsequent pre-Hispanic ceremony included traditional dances to honor ancestral Cholula.

In her address, Fernández also expressed support for President Claudia Sheinbaum regarding the defense of national sovereignty, advocating for dialogue and consensus over unnecessary interventionism from external actors.
