Colombia reports police captures and security initiatives during June holidays

During the June holiday period Colombian authorities reported a series of security actions across several departments. In Guaviare, police captured six people in flagrante delicto, seized narcotics and issued 24 citations, while a public‑transport bus overturned, injuring four. Barranquilla announced a 600‑billion‑peso investment in security, including a new local criminal analysis centre equipped with intelligence technology. Medellín’s rapid‑response system located 249 of 292 reported missing persons, achieving an 85 % success rate, though eight victims were found deceased. Manizales police seized 131 weapons, confiscated marijuana, coca base and cocaine, and recorded 240 emergency calls while detaining 15 suspects. The city of Bogotá deployed over 500 staff for a citizen‑culture campaign ahead of the 2026 World Cup matches, focusing on violence prevention and traffic safety. In Chapinero, OXXO stores expanded the "Redes Seguras" programme with 48 new outlets, bringing the total safe‑space locations to 118 for women facing gender‑based violence. In Huila’s San Pedro festivities, the police noted a sharp decline in theft‑related crimes but reported four traffic‑related deaths, 200 arrests and the seizure of 220 kg of marijuana. Tolima’s security chiefs likewise highlighted a positive safety balance during regional festivals.
