San Pedro Sula mayor denies presidential ambitions as security improves

San Pedro Sula Mayor Roberto Contreras has stated that he has no interest in running for the presidency of Honduras. He emphasized his commitment to managing the country’s primary industrial hub, describing the city as the “economic lung of all Honduras.” Contreras noted that he prefers to focus on efficient and transparent municipal administration rather than pursuing a presidential candidacy.

Separately, Honduras Security Minister Gerzon Velásquez announced that San Pedro Sula is no longer ranked among the 50 most violent cities in the world. While acknowledging that significant challenges remain regarding homicide, extortion, and residential robbery, Velásquez stated that authorities are working with business and social sectors to develop a security model to further reduce violence indicators.
