San Rafael and Tegucigalpa launch WhatsApp tools to report illegal dumping

Municipalities in San Rafael, Argentina, and Tegucigalpa, Honduras, have implemented WhatsApp-based reporting systems to combat illegal waste disposal and clandestine landfills.

In San Rafael, residents can report vehicles dumping debris, trash, or pruning waste in public spaces such as streets, roadsides, and irrigation ditches. By sending a photograph to a dedicated number, citizens provide evidence that allows authorities to identify offenders and apply sanctions. The initiative aims to reduce the need for additional cleaning resources caused by unauthorized dumping.

In Tegucigalpa, the Alcaldía Municipal del Distrito Central (AMDC) has launched a similar tool to facilitate reports on improper waste accumulation. Residents are instructed to message a specific number with a description of the situation, a photograph of the site, and their exact location. This information allows the AMDC to coordinate cleaning efforts and implement measures to prevent sites from becoming recurring dump locations.
