Spain energy sector faces legal and political delays
The Spanish renewable energy sector is facing significant administrative and political hurdles. In Galicia, the Asociación Eólica de Galicia (EGA) is calling for the resolution of over 240 pending legal appeals. These appeals have stalled approximately 90 wind farms, representing an estimated 3,500 megawatts of power and 3.5 billion euros in investment. While a recent court ruling regarding the Bustelo park has provided some legal certainty, industry leaders warn that resolving all pending files could take more than a year.
Simultaneously, the call for early general elections in Spain has created uncertainty for major energy infrastructure projects. The political shift threatens the approval of a massive modernization plan for the national transport grid, managed by Red Eléctrica and Enagás. This plan involves investments exceeding 17 billion euros to expand the electrical grid and deploy green hydrogen networks. The timing of the elections complicates the legislative process required to finalize these strategic energy policies.
