San Raffaele Hospital resumes reproductive medicine activities

The San Raffaele Hospital in Milan has resumed activities at its Embryology Laboratory following a temporary suspension ordered by the ATS (Agenzia di Tutela della Salute). The suspension was triggered by an incident on July 23, where a human error led to the incorrect implantation of an embryo after two biologists mistakenly swapped test tubes during preparation.

Outpatient services at the Center for Reproductive Medicine had previously resumed on August 24 following a scheduled summer break. As of August 31, the embryology laboratory has also reopened, allowing medically assisted procreation procedures to continue.

The hospital stated it has been working closely with the ATS of the Metropolitan City of Milan and the National Transplant Center (CNT) to implement corrective and preventive measures. These improvements focus on patient and biological material identification, traceability of procedures, and organizational restructuring to ensure patient safety.
