San Ramón Nonato: Feast day honors patron saint of childbirth

August 31 marks the feast day of San Ramón Nonato, a prominent figure in the Christian liturgical calendar. Born in Catalonia around 1200, he earned his name because he was delivered via caesarean section after his mother died during childbirth. This unique origin led to his designation as the patron saint of pregnant women, childbirth, and newborns.

A member of the Order of Mercy, San Ramón dedicated much of his life to the redemption of Christian captives in North Africa. He famously offered himself as a hostage to secure the release of prisoners and endured significant persecution, including having a padlock placed on his lips to prevent him from preaching. He eventually rose to the rank of cardinal before his death in 1240.

In San Ramón de la Nueva Orán, Argentina, local authorities and thousands of residents gathered to celebrate the city's 232nd anniversary alongside his feast day.
