El Salvador's Agostinas holidays spark bank closures, border upgrades and diaspora travel

During the first week of August 2026, El Salvador observes the Agostinas celebrations in honor of the Divino Salvador del Mundo. The Superintendencia del Sistema Financiero ordered nationwide bank closures on August 3, 5 and a mandatory shutdown on August 6, with limited hours on other days, affecting commercial, cooperative and investment banks.

The festivities began on August 1 with the traditional Desfile del Correo. Mayor Mario Durán opened the parade, which featured dozens of colorful floats, mariachi bands and security forces from the PNC, Armed Forces and Civil Protection. The event drew large crowds in San Salvador and highlighted the perceived improvement in public safety.

Anticipating a surge of Salvadoran tourists, Honduras' Instituto Nacional de Migración launched a special operation from July 31 to August 9, extending staff and keeping key border posts such as El Florido and El Amatillo open 24 hours to expedite travel.

The holidays also prompted a wave of return trips by Salvadorans living abroad. Travelers from the United States described the country as safer and welcomed the new arrivals terminal at El Salvador International Airport, which opened in June to speed up processing.

Overall, the Agostinas period combined cultural celebrations, financial service disruptions, cross‑border coordination and a notable diaspora reunion.
