Anthropic has introduced the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a new specification designed to allow AI agents to interact directly with physical devices in laboratory and manufacturing environments. Developed in collaboration with the Janelia Research Campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, MHS provides a standardized driver layer that enables agents to perform basic operations such as 'read' and 'write' on programmable equipment like microscopes and robotic arms.

The standard includes a discovery mechanism for device identification and a tagging system for metadata, which describes physical properties such as load capacity, range, and safety limits. AI agents can access these devices through several pathways, including the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a Command Line Interface (CLI), or direct code. This initiative aims to create a unified interface for hardware control, reducing the need for individual connections for every piece of equipment.
