San Vicente Coatlán authorities demand halt to Mujer Solteca dam construction
Agrarian authorities in San Vicente Coatlán, Oaxaca, have demanded that state and federal governments immediately halt the construction of the Mujer Solteca dam. In documents sent to various officials, including President Claudia Sheinbaum, representatives warned that failure to stop the works could lead to violence in the region.
The community has declared a state of maximum alert, citing a 2012 incident where an ambush resulted in ten deaths. Authorities noted that recent construction movements near the confluence of the Sola and Atoyac rivers are disrupting local peace and ignoring previous promises made during the administration of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to resolve agrarian and environmental conflicts.
A community assembly is planned to determine the population's official stance regarding the dam project and the ongoing agrarian conflict with the municipality of Villa Sola de Vega.
