San Vicente de la Sonsierra uncovers 12th-century wine press

Archaeological excavations in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, located in La Rioja Alta, have uncovered a 12th-century wine press beneath the ruins of a medieval castle. The discovery includes a rock-cut cellar and a rupestrian wine press that had been sealed by sediment since the 12th or 13th century.

The site, situated on a hill overlooking the Ebro river, served as a strategic frontier between the kingdoms of Navarra and Castilla. The findings provide significant insight into medieval wine production methods in the region.
