San Vito Lo Capo sewage plant accident kills worker and emergency responder
Two people died following a workplace accident at a municipal sewage treatment plant in San Vito Lo Capo, Sicily. The victims have been identified as 45-year-old worker Davide Anselmo and 64-year-old 118 emergency medical responder Francesco Bulgarella.
According to preliminary reports, Anselmo was performing routine maintenance or inspections within the facility located in the Tonnara del Secco area when he was overcome by toxic fumes. Emergency responders arrived to assist, but while Bulgarella was performing CPR on Anselmo, he also collapsed. Investigators are currently determining whether Bulgarella died from the same toxic inhalation or from a cardiac arrest potentially exacerbated by high temperatures.
The Carabinieri and inspectors from Spresal (the service for the prevention and safety of work environments) are conducting an investigation into the incident. Authorities are examining whether proper safety protocols were followed, including the use of personal protective equipment, gas detectors, and adequate ventilation. The facility had previously been subject to a preventive seizure by the Prosecutor's Office in 2016 regarding suspected marine water pollution.
